Problems with TVS diodes and varistors.

Hardware design
September 21, 2020 by Micah 1672

Ask you a question about the selection of TVS diodes and varistors. When a certain DC 48V power supply is suddenly dumped, the power supply voltage will rise above 60V (for example, it suddenly rises to 80 or 90 volts, and the normal value is restored within 2s). To ensure safety, I plan to add tvs diodes and varistors, but now I use SA60A tvs diodes and S14K60 varistors, and the two are connected in parallel to the power supply terminal; but the voltage will still rise to Seventy-odd volts, did I choose the wrong model? ? What is the reason! Thank you all! ! ! !

The breakdown voltage of SA60A is between 66 and 73V, so your results are similar; the maximum AC of S14K60 is 60V, and the DC can be 85V.

The discharge load is suddenly disconnected and the voltage will overshoot. This situation still needs to be solved in the charger.

Look at the pdf, the clamp voltage of 60V is not 60V, and the 2s impact TVS may not be able to withstand.
